Wolf's Blood: PrologueEngland 1736
A cold breeze was dancing through the bare branches of birch and oak trees. The sky was a pale grey of early dawn. The ground was frozen and speckled with the early frost of winter. A thick fog moved silently through the shadowed forest. It was eerily quiet, not even the light song of morning birds could be heard.
It was then that a ghastly shriek shattered the silence. A girl, no more than seventeen, appeared out of the mist. She wore a filthy grey dress, which was stained crimson. It was torn in many places and hung loosely over her shoulders. She was running barefoot, her long blonde hair, messy and tangled, streamed out behind her. The girl's face was layered in mud and dried blood. There were great tears of fear rolling down her cheeks from her blue-green eyes. Her soft lips were split and bleeding.
Suddenly, her foot caught on a root and the girl screamed. She tried to get up, tried to keep running. But as soon as she put some weight on her left leg, she toppl
Red Riding HoodI want to believe people so badly when they say they won’t bite
that I contemplate climbing into their smiling jaws
thinking that it might be better to be split in two than left hanging.
But always, I draw my red hood and flit back into the forest
running in the shadows of pathways, never stepping into clearings
because I’ve spent my whole life in the wilderness
and I still can’t tell the wolves from the woodsmen.
